World-wide Vajra Cutter Sutra Recitations with Ven. Namjong
The Fifteen Days of Miracles—from the first day of the Tibetan new year (Losar, February 12) until the fifteenth (February 27)—commemorate the special time when Guru Shakyamuni Buddha showed miraculous powers in order to subdue six tirthika, or non-Buddhist teachers, who lacked faith in him, and to inspire more faith in his followers. It culminates on the full moon, the fifteenth day of the lunar calendar, which is the actual day of Chotrul Duchen.
All fifteen days are merit multiplying days, when the merit of virtuous actions performed on these days is multiplied by 100 million, as cited by Lama Zopa Rinpoche from the vinaya text Treasure of Quotations and Logic.
In order to take full advantage of these merit multiplying days to clear away obstacles and to create the causes of success for the New Tibetan year, Root Institute is hosting worldwide recitations of the Vajra Cutter Sutra. The Vajra Cutter Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sutra) is one of the most important of the Perfection of Wisdom sutras, which describe the wisdom of ultimate reality.
Lama Zopa Rinpoche highly praises even the mere recitation of the sutra as a highly effective practice for purification of obstacles and accumulation of merit. He says: "The most important thing is that each time we read it; it plants a seed, an imprint to realize emptiness. The more you read it, the more imprints it leaves on the mind. So it becomes easy to realize emptiness. It becomes quicker and quicker to realize emptiness in this life. If not in this life, then quickly in future lives."
Participation in the Vajra Cutter Sutra course (Details) is encouraged but not a requirement to participate in the sutra readings. The total recitations done over the Days of Miracles will be offered to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche for their long and stable lives and for all of their holy wishes to be fulfilled.
